Minor Field Trip and Seminar
January 23, 2016
Seminar Overview
We conduct our Minor Field Trip and Seminar four months after the major field trip in which we go to manila. In our Minor Field Trip we decided to have a conference within the social hall in the University of Southeastern Philippines. The event title was Graphic Design and Web Development. In which it is a great opportunity to learn about graphic design and web development, there were two topics introduced to us where the first speaker share his knowledge about graphic tools and the fundamentals of design, In which we learn the concepts of the principles of design and how it works in real world. The second speaker share her knowledge about front end development, and the basic foundations of front end development and the difference of front end and back end development, And she share some experiences being a frond end developer and the challenges she's taking and how did she overcome it. And lastly the third speaker in which he share his experiences in competitions and being successful and a proud graduate of the Institute of Computing.
It was a successful event, which we enjoy a lot, join activities such as Hackathon and Startup Pitching Competition. We learn a lot from the speakers and to look forward for our future, about the challenges and the opportunities waiting for us and lastly we enjoy the snacks and lunch served to us.
Graphic Tools and the fundamentals of design
The first topic was discussed by Mr. Ralph Gideon, he is a graduate of BS Information Technology in the University of Southeastern Philippines, he is a proud alumnus of our school. He told us his experiences in life especially the kind of work his looking for in which he loves art. After he graduated, his first job was being a programmer in PRC or Professional Regulation Commission. He loves his job however deep in his heart, he want to pursue his goals in which he quit on his job as a programmer in PRC, and enrolled Fine Arts in the University of Mindanao. He said that he is working as an Art Teacher in the Ateneo de Davao University, and he didn't regret it, and he is grateful that he follow his heart.
Mr. Ralph starts the discussion and he share his knowledge and experiences with us about the Elements and Design Principles. In which he combined Arts and Information Technology to present to us his knowledge about it. And also we all know that principles of design describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art and to describe fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. Mr. Ralph introduces to us the six principles of design: Balance, Proximity, Alignment, Repetition, Contrast, and Space. He said that the elements and principles of design are the building blocks which are the things that make up a design or build a design. And how we apply these principles of design to determine how successful the design is. The First principle is the Balance, he said that Balance in design is a bit similar to balance in physics where he give an example of a large shape close to the center and can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge like in seesaw. Balance also provides stability and the structure to a design in which its weight distributed in the design. Second principle is, Proximity, in which he said that Proximity creates the relationship between elements. In design, it provides a focal point he said. Mr. Ralph said that the elements should be visually connected in some way. Third Principle, is the Alignment, it is an element to create order and organisation in a design, He said that aligning elements in order allows them to create a visual connection with each other. Fourth is, Repetition, in which he said that this element strengthens a design by tying together individual elements. Repetition can create rhythm and helps to create association and consistency. Fifth is, the Contrast, Contrast allows us to emphasize or highlight key elements in our design, he said that it is the juxtaposition of opposing elements. And the last principle is the Space, where space refers to the distance or area between, around, above, and below within the elements. We learn a lot from Mr. Ralph and we are lucky because he shares some examples, as his own experiences that help us visualize the necessary things to be learned.
What I liked?
What
I liked the most is that he discussed with us the fundamentals of design . He
introduced to us the basic tools and fundamentals for creating a good output. And the six principles of design: Balance,
Proximity, Alignment, Repetition, Contrast, and Space. And he is proud of being
a graduate in UseP.
What I didn't like?
What
I didn't like is that he didn't show us some of his work during his first job as
a programmer, and being a fine arts teacher and not using his profession as an
IT.
Front end web development
The second topic was discussed by Ms. Shannen Sapar, she is an undergraduate of BS Information Technology in the University of Immaculate Concepcion, she didn't finish her studies because of some circumstances in her life. She told us his experiences in life especially the kind of work she's looking for. At first, she said that she likes do some work with vectors, graphics design, because she loves to design. She look for a job in which a company named Ingenuity Global Consulting is looking for a front end web developer, in which Ms. Shannen was hired. She said that being a front end web developer is a tough job at first because she rather choose doing graphic design than programming and do web development.
Ms. Shannen starts the discussion and she share her knowledge and experiences with us about being a front end web developer. But first what is a front end web development, a front end web development is a mix of programming and layout that powers the visuals and interactions of the web. Whereas being a front end developer need some skills and expertise in HTML, CSS, and Javascript or web applications so that a user can see and interact with them directly. Ms. Shannen also, share his techniques being a developer, with the use of the bootstraps and many more. She talked about the latest version of HTML which is the HTML 5 which is a markup language used for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. And also she discussed about the CSS preprocessors. CSS preprocessors take code written in the preprocessed language and then convert that code into the same old CSS. Ms. Shannen tells us the 3 popular CSS preprocessors: Sass, LESS, and Stylus.
She told us why using CSS preprocessors is a good technique in developing a web. She said that css preprocessors are not bound by the limitations of css. She also said that CSS is great, but it doesn't always let us do everything we'd like. Ms. Shannen also differentiate Front End and a Back end, by which she give us an example, we pretend that a website is a car. The things inside the car that help it run, make it speed up, slow down, all of these things you can't see but they are important, these are the back end, she said. And there are things inside the car in which you directly use like the gas to make it go, the pedals to brake the car, and many more, these are the front end, she said. We learn a lot from her, because someday, I might become a front end web developer also.
What I liked?
What
I liked the most is that she discussed the fundamentals and techniques of being
a front end development, and how does it work. It focuses on the design which
the use of latest HTML 5 and CSS. And how to simply code it so that the back end developer
will not having a hard time using the design.
What I didn't liked?
What
I didn't liked is that she always talk about the tools in which she uses in his
profession. She always use bootstraps and many more and she always tell us her
experiences with the bootstraps and the tools she is using in her company. And
she still an undergraduate.
3rd Speaker : Nikko Comidoy
The third speaker was Nikko Comidoy, an IT graduate from our school. He is well known for his application named "Doc Banana" in which he and his team won in a competition. He share his experiences when he was still a student and attending field trip and seminar. And also his experiences in technopreneurship. He tells us about the things we must learn in order to achieve our goals. And he said that all the things we can learn is from the outside of the school not in the inside, which it is true, where Sir Randy tells us the same thing. He gave us some advice to pursue our goals and tips and techniques to graduate.
What I liked?
What
I liked the most is that Nikko share with us his experiences here in our
university, because sir Nikko is one of the best in our school because of his
app DocBanana. He eventually share the techniques and encourage us to be
successful also and not to stop to pursue our dreams.
What I didn't liked?
What
I didn't like is that he eventually tell us jokes but joke is a joke. He scare
us to shift to other course but we can't give up to our profession.
Hackathon
and Pitching Activity
In
the afternoon, there is a hackathon event in the social hall, in which they
will answer and code the following problems, the winners is announced in the afternoon with
their corresponding prizes. At the same time in the afternoon, our pitching
activity was begun, we are divided into 5 groups with our mentors. Our mentor
was sir Nikko, we pitch to him and suddenly , he chose me to be in the top 10
to present in the stage. But I didn't win the pitching activity.
