Seminar Overview
Field Trip and Seminar is one of the memorable experienced I ever had in my life. First of all I am very lucky that I am a part of the class that has the opportunity to experience that others may not acquire. I didn’t expect that this activity would be really successful. The time that I enrol in this subject I feel empty and I just want to comply. We all know that we cannot graduate in our course if we do not enrol in the FTS. Actually that time I think that this seminar is useless and the money that we are paying is not worth it. But the as the time pass by, while preparing in the event little by little I got excited. And now I just realized that the money that we pay is not useless. How can I say that? Because I didn’t expect that this seminar will give us knowledge that we may use in the future. Also this field trip and seminar gives me new experiences that I faced.
It is so challenging in my part, because there is a lot of thing that I don’t know. During the duration of the trip, I can say that I have been more observant on the things around me. And also this field trip and seminar open up my mind in the thing around me that I do not know. This is a tool for each and everyone to know somehow know what is happening in the outside world most especially in the world of technology.
This field trip also gives me not only knowledge but also enjoyment and relaxation. I can say that for the 5 days I feel that I am happy always. I also created and meet new groups. And I am very thankful for the opportunity of meet new friends from the higher years. Talking to them and sharing new ideas is a great moment for me. Also in the trip I learn to share my knowledge for them, I admit that I am a shy type of person and I don’t usually talk to others. But this trip me change a little of my personality. I have learned to talk and not being shy to share and express what I feel. Thus, I have developed my social communication. I know that this trip so not perfect and there are some things that I do not like. As an IT student I have set standards on the field trip that I want to acquire and I want to see. But in totality, I am satisfied in the result of the field trip.
Also I am very thankful for the success of this subject, for giving me knowledge and for letting me be open minded in the thing around me and in the world. For the five days of staying in the Manila I have learned a lot that I may use in my studies and to my future work. I would say that this will not last only in my college but also for the rest of my life. I know that this field trip and seminar would not be successful if the officers do not work properly and I want to thank them. Also to our facilitator for their everlasting support and care for us, I can see their effort and dedication in giving us safety for the whole duration of the trip. And for all the parents and guardian who support to us, especially in the financial mater and lastly to our creator for guiding us and protecting us for our trip, for keeping us safe and away from evil. Without the help of everybody, I do not think that this field trip and seminar would be successful.
Day 1
I went on a seminar to the DOST and SSS.
What I learned?
The Department has seven branches and one of it is the Science and Technology Information Institute. We were welcomed by one of the Institute’s I.T experts and he shared us first about his works, what kind of student he was before, objectives and accomplishments of the department and later on proceeded to proper lecture. He also discussed the project NOAH. I was very amazed on this project. I have learned that is not just an application that solved problems in our society but also it is very useful for the people. I was also amaze on the different ways that the Department of Science and Technology monitors the different regions in the water level of the rivers. I have learned that there are different gadgets and censors that updates time to time in monitoring that water level so that people can be alert in times of danger.
We also room around the SSS museum since the seminar was held there. They talk about how they manage their company and accessing their servers and services all over the country. I have learned the different services that they have. Also their goals and history of the company. Also my time is not wasted because while travelling our tour guide tell us the different infrastructure of place.
What I like?
I like when they discussed about the project NOAH they made. It was a perfect project because it was an extraordinary implementation that can help both to the experts in disasters like Phivolcs and to us. And the idea was made when our president request a system that will help determine disasters and calamities in our country. They also encourage us to be part of their team after we graduated in college. And also they encourage us in working with DOST.
I really like when they discussed about the benefits and importance of being a member of SSS. I also like their building it is so big. And also after we visit the two companies, I like the food that we ate in the dinner. The foods there is so delicious especially the chicken and the fried lumpia and many other.
What I didn't like?
I didn't like in SSS that they don't share much about things that are related to our course so that we can learn and improve our understanding in our expertise. I expect that they will let us see their control room that our facilitator told us. If they let us see their control room I am very sure that we will learn a lot from them that I will be able to use in my future work. But unfortunately they do not allow us and just discuss other topics. What I have seen and learn from the Social Security System (SSS) is not satisfactory.
Day 2
I went on a seminar to the PLDT Company, INNOLAB at Mandaluyong and IBM Philippines at Quezon City
What I learned?
This is the second day of our trip, the class is divided into two groups the bus one will go in the PLDT and the bus 2 will go to the Accenture. And the both bus will go to the IBM.
I was assigned in the bus 1. What I have learned many things at PLDT. They share to us the history of telephones and the internet here in the Philippines. And how did PLDT develop their technology to serve the needs of the people here in Philippines. INNOLAB facility is a laboratory for innovations and testing of their newly developed systems or machines. They also led us to their technical rooms and explained how it works. Also in the IBM I have learned about Watson and how it works. I have also learned different technique that I may use in the future especially for my thesis. I learned about the bluemix, the creator of the this project is
What I like?
I like the story of their chronological events from the time the company started up to the present. I also like when they presented us the new internet plan which is a fiber connection. And they let us see some facilities with great inventions, and they take us to their conference room, where we can see internet connection all over the Philippines in the big screens, they manage and handle every connection.
What I didn't like?
I didn't like when we can't enter the room with the prototypes have been developed because they have a client in that hour. I want to have the opportunity to see what is inside of the room. I know that if we are allowed to see the room there would be a lot of knowledge and this would be a new experience to us. But unfortunately they do not allow us and as a student I need to understand it. And also the students whose taking up there On the job training, they can't explain to us properly their presentation they make.
Day 3
I went on a seminar to the 13thPhilippine Youth Congress Information Technology (Y4IT)
What I learned?
I went to the 13th Y4IT youth convention at SMX,MOA. It was a great experience because most of all IT students where gathered in one place. I did not expect that there would be a lot of students and experts who joined the event. Some experts introduced some new technology that will be developed soon and new inventions to be created. Our facilitator gave a welcome remark to us. They encourage us to study more and make new ideas to innovate so that we will become successful in our expertise. In this day is such a great opportunity for me and for my classmate. And I am very lucky because I have given a change to witness the sharing of the others.
I have also seen plenty Y4IT exhibitor. I have learned different technology that they want to be known especially in the world of Information Technology. Like the Accenture, upitdc, pldt, KLab cyscorpions and many more. I go to the booths where some big companies introduced their services and they have some small events inside.
What I like?
I like the technology they introduced to us, it is very interesting to use, but for sure it was expensive. I like the speaker who is a game developer, because I want to make games also. He introduced the basics and concepts in making a good and well planned game where the users is satisfied with it.
What I didn't like?
Actually there is no thing that I didn’t like in the Y4IT because I have learned many knowledge that I have acquired. The thing that I didn't like is the bus schedule, too long to wait for our bus to come and pick us. We have a little time going and shopping to MOA.
Day 4
I went on a seminar to the MMDA Traffic Engineering at EDSA, Makati
What I learned?
As all we know, everyday in the news we can see the traffic in metro manila. Inside their control room where they have big screens in which it monitors the city streets by means of a CCTV camera, and under it where the servers and database are located. We saw how they managed the traffic in metro manila. And I was really amazed on the techniques that they have uses to do their task. Also Enchanted Kingdom, even if it is not related to the learning of our field I have learned lesson that I can keep in my life. One of this is you should not be afraid of the ups and downs in your life. Like I was riding the dangerous and extreme ride in the EK I should not fear on what will happens in my life. You should be fearless and be strong. Also I have remembered my family, in times of riding the rides I always shout the names of my parents. And I have learned that I need to show the love and care to them as long as I am living because there would be no time in showing them how I love them if I will die or vice versa.
What I like?
I like their system in managing the heavy traffic in metro manila and how they monitor their CCTV cameras in certain places, and how they react to certain disasters like car accidents, floods, and etc. They also showed us how they respond to the traffic accidents. It helps them a lot to reduce crimes by monitoring the suspects. They also presented some videos of traffic accidents. It also helps the flow of traffic run smoothly. I also like in the event of this day is the Enchanted Kingdom, because it is a wonderful experience that I will never forget in my whole life. Especially the most dangerous rides.
What I didn't like?
I didn't like some of their sharing because, they always talk and share about the traffic handling, and I am expecting to have some sharing connected to our course. I am expecting to learn about how they manage their servers, how it works smoothly, and other things. And also, I didn't like the heavy traffic that caused our delay in other place.
Day 5
Last day of our field trip and seminars, I went on a seminar to UP Diliman, Department of Computer Science.
What I learned?
I learned many things inside the computer science department. First they have adequate equipments and facilities and also their standard of teaching. And found out that UP don't have a bachelor of science in Information Technology course. But they have many different programs in which you can choose your own profession. And the students prepare their thesis in advance so that they can research more about it.
What I like?
I really like when the students from different program in the department of computer science shares with us their thesis. Every thesis they present are related to the different programs with unique concept and purpose. They have creative ideas to make an outstanding thesis, and also they still developing and researching to complete their thesis and to develop it.
What I didn't like?
I really don't like when they let us see their facilities in different programs, because they said that the students having their lectures in the facilities. I'm expecting that in different programs they will demonstrate some skills or concept in taking up that kind of program. We are not able to see their thesis and projects that have been already developed, and what kind of technology they are using.
APPENDIX
What can I recommend for the improvement of the advance seminar program of USEP?
What can I recommend for the improvement of the advance seminar program of USEP, is the they must have a clear itinerary. They must choose the best companies that they will choose. So that the student must learn many thing in the trip. Also I hope that each student must come to the meetings so that the
My advice to those who will take their advance seminar program in the near future.
My advice to those who will take their advance seminar program in the near future is they must prepare the money ahead of time so that the class will not have problems in the near future. Also they will need to listen and be attentive in all the happening in the field trip and seminar so that they will know what to write in the travel report. I advice them to take down notes on what they will learn in that day. Also in preparing the papers needed for the trip, each individual must be always updated to the officers so that the papers will be tack-in and the officers will not be have a hard time in collecting the papers.
